VOLUNTEERING
Peak Rail, like many other heritage railways is operated and maintained almost entirely by a volunteer workforce and we always welcome new applicants. The only qualifications needed are to be over 16 and a member of the Peak Railway Association, which is essential for insurance purposes.
You do not need to be passionate about railways or have any prior knowledge of them as we have roles to suit everyone. You may wish to bring an existing skill to the railway or learn a new one, whatever your choice full training is always given.
For a young person still in education volunteering is an excellent way of acquiring knowledge and experience of a working environment. Some of our younger volunteers have used it as a stepping stone to a successful career in a position of responsibility on the national railway.
You may be a couple whose children have fledged the family nest and are looking for an activity you can share. Perhaps when the children were younger you visited the railway. This could be a way to re-live the memories while helping a new generation of children enjoy the magic of a steam train.
Retirement brings its own challenges and volunteering can help with the transition to an enjoyable retirement by maintaining a sense of purpose so many feel they have lost, plus you have a lifetime of experience to offer.
As a volunteer you only need to offer whatever time you wish, be it one day a month, one day a week or even several days a week. The choice is yours and we have some volunteers who only help during special events and bank holidays.
If you are interested in volunteering then the first thing you will receive, after a short safety briefing, is a tour round the railway starting with the main site at Rowsley. You will be shown the various departments and workshops and be introduced to some of the other volunteers. This may help you decide the type of role you would like should you be unsure. You will see the professionalism required to ensure the safe operation of the railway along with the safety of its staff and the public.
Once you become a volunteer you will be eligible for a volunteer pass which entitles you to unlimited travel on our trains on normal timetabled services and a discount in the station café at Rowsley. However the main benefits of volunteering are the companionship and camaraderie of being with a mix of like minded people of all ages. Fellow volunteers become almost an extension of your family and the good humoured banter and leg pulling at break times and social events is something money can’t buy.
Of course joining in is not compulsory but I defy anyone to resist.
